Limerick University Secures €1 Million to Combat Microplastics
The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) has made significant strides in the fight against microplastics in forestry, securing over €1 million from the Research Ireland National Challenge Fund (NCF). This funding represents a noteworthy achievement for TUS, marking its first win in the prize phase of the NCF. James Lawless TD, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, announced the funding, highlighting its importance to the university’s research initiatives.
TUS is among six teams selected to receive a portion of the €8 million prize pool for the innovative Traceless project. Under the leadership of Dr. Yuanyuan Chen from TUS, the project collaborates with Professor Maurice Collins from the University of Limerick and industry partner Maurice Ryan of Green Belt Ltd. The initiative emerged as the overall winner of the Healthy Environment for All Challenge, showcasing its potential to address environmental challenges.
Dr. Liam Brown, Vice President of Research, Development & Innovation at TUS, emphasized the project’s significance. He stated, “This is a first for TUS and is a testament to our commitment to finding practical, scalable solutions to the global sustainability challenge.” He further noted that the Traceless project exemplifies how applied research can create tangible impacts while intertwining innovation and sustainability.
The Traceless project specifically targets the environmental hazards posed by plastic tree shelters, which degrade into harmful microplastics. The team’s goal is to develop fully biodegradable and durable tree-support products that also feature controlled release fertilizers. This innovative approach not only addresses the immediate issue of microplastic pollution but also positions Ireland as a potential leader in sustainable forestry solutions.
The funding from the NCF allows the Traceless team to scale its solution, enhancing Ireland’s role in promoting environmentally responsible forestry practices on a global scale. The project aligns with the European Union’s targets for plastic reduction and aims to improve soil health, underscoring the broader implications of this research.
With the Traceless project, TUS is paving the way for a future where sustainability and innovation go hand in hand, offering a model for other institutions and industries to follow. As the research progresses, it holds the promise of making a significant impact on both the forestry sector and environmental health in Ireland and beyond.
