Smartphone Overuse Linked to Cognitive Decline, Expert Warns

In an alarming statement, Marc Tadié, director of the French Brain Research Institute, has highlighted the potential dangers of excessive smartphone use, warning that it can lead to cognitive decline. In an interview with the German magazine Welt, Tadié pointed out that over-reliance on smartphones particularly impacts the hippocampus, a critical region of the brain responsible for memory.

Tadié drew a concerning analogy between the decline in cognitive function associated with smartphone use and the reduced size of the hippocampus observed in London taxi drivers following the introduction of GPS navigation systems. He explained that continuous smartphone engagement weakens the neural pathways linked to attention, perception, and memory consolidation, resulting in long-term cognitive issues. “It’s akin to an unused railway line becoming overgrown with weeds,” he noted.

Moderation and Awareness Are Key

While Tadié acknowledged that smartphones can have beneficial effects, particularly for older individuals by reducing loneliness and enhancing procedural memory, he emphasized the need for moderation and age-appropriate usage. He proposed the implementation of a “smartphone driving licence” system, which would set minimum age requirements based on the functionalities of devices. Furthermore, he advocates for awareness campaigns to promote responsible smartphone habits.

Excessive smartphone use is not only linked to cognitive decline but also appears to negatively impact empathy and interpersonal relationships. Research has indicated a decrease in empathy and challenges in recognizing emotional expressions such as fear and sadness among frequent smartphone users. Young people, despite feeling connected through social media, often exhibit social withdrawal, preferring to check in online rather than engage in face-to-face interactions.

“Smartphone addiction is a reality, as dopamine—the feel-good hormone—is released with every interaction,” Tadié stated, emphasizing the addictive nature of these devices.

Calls for Regulatory Action in Education

Tadié’s concerns extend into the educational sector, where he supports a general ban on smartphones in schools. This proposal follows President Macron‘s recent advocacy for such measures in France, aimed at improving students’ attention, concentration, and memory while also reducing social inequality and instances of cyberbullying. While no nationwide ban currently exists, similar regulations have already been enacted in Belgium, where a strict prohibition on smartphones and smart devices in schools came into effect for the 2025-2026 school year.

In the Netherlands, schools have prohibited mobile phones, tablets, and smartwatches in classrooms since 2024, with clear agreements established among teachers, parents, and students regarding device usage. The trend toward regulating smartphone use in educational environments underscores a growing recognition of the potential adverse effects these technologies can have on young minds.
