Amy Broadhurst Rejoins GB Boxing, Eyes Los Angeles 2028 Olympics
Amy Broadhurst has made a significant return to elite amateur boxing, rejoining the GB Boxing programme after an 18-month absence. The lightweight from Dundalk stepped away following a challenging Olympic cycle, which included her switch in international allegiance from Ireland to Great Britain in April 2024. This decision came about after she was not selected for the Irish Olympic qualification process, despite her impressive credentials.
Broadhurst’s eligibility to compete for Great Britain stems from her English father and her British passport. Her integration into the GB system was swift, but her Olympic dreams faced a setback when she lost in the quarter-finals to South Korea’s Yeonji Oh during the final Olympic qualifier in Thailand in May 2024. This defeat effectively ended her hopes of competing in the Paris 2024 Olympics.
With the Olympic opportunity behind her and the arrival of motherhood, the 28-year-old chose to step back from the sport. After a period of reflection and adjustment, Broadhurst is now focused on her ambitions for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
Reflections on Her Journey and Return
In a recent statement, Broadhurst expressed her thoughts on the whirlwind of her past experiences and the support she received from GB Boxing. “The decision to switch in 2024 happened very quickly, but from day one I was made to feel welcome and looked after really well,” she remarked. “That made it an easy decision to come back into the squad.”
Balancing motherhood with the demands of high-level boxing presents challenges, but Broadhurst finds motivation in her son. “He’s the reason I push myself every day,” she shared. She emphasized that having him with her will help keep her grounded and focused on her goals.
Broadhurst also noted the impact of her previous struggles, stating, “At the time it was devastating, but I don’t see it that way anymore. Everything happens for a reason.” She is now concentrating on her weight category, feeling strong at 60kg and aiming for consistency in her training.
Commitment to the Future
With a clear focus on her Olympic goals, Broadhurst is dedicated to a long-term training plan over the next two and a half years. “The next two and a half years are crucial. The goal is simple — train hard, keep improving, and give myself every possible chance of making it to the Los Angeles Olympics,” she stated.
As Broadhurst embarks on this new chapter, her story is one of resilience and determination. The comeback of one of Ireland’s most decorated amateur fighters is now underway, fueled by a desire to achieve unfinished business in the boxing ring. Her journey is not only about personal triumph but also serves as an inspiration to many who face challenges in pursuing their dreams.
