Arsenal Eyes Georgia Stanway as Bayern Exit Confirmed
Arsenal has expressed interest in acquiring midfielder Georgia Stanway, who is set to leave Bayern Munich this summer following the end of her contract. According to Sky Sports News, initial discussions have taken place between the club and Stanway, although other teams in the Women’s Super League (WSL) are also reportedly keen on the England international.
Stanway’s departure from Bayern was confirmed on March 9, 2024, marking the conclusion of a successful four-year stint at the German club. The 27-year-old is eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club this month, allowing her to explore new opportunities ahead of the summer transfer window.
In a heartfelt statement, Stanway reflected on her time at Bayern, expressing gratitude for the experiences she has gained. “I am incredibly grateful to FC Bayern for the past years. And thankfully, my time here isn’t over yet,” she said. “The decision to leave Munich and my team was incredibly difficult and definitely not easy for me. I’ve made friends and memories here that will last a lifetime, and I’ve also been able to develop enormously as a player and as a person.”
Stanway has vowed to contribute fully to Bayern’s success until her final match with the team, aiming to depart with as many titles as possible. She stated, “I will give everything for the club and its sporting success until my very last day, just as I have for the past three and a half years.”
Stanway’s Impact at Bayern
Since joining Bayern from Manchester City in the summer of 2022, Stanway has become a crucial figure in the team. During her tenure, she has helped the club secure three league titles, a German Cup, and two German Super Cups. In addition, she played a pivotal role in England’s success at the European Championships, contributing to their consecutive title wins.
Bayern’s director of women’s football, Bianca Rech, praised Stanway’s contributions, saying, “As the first English player at FC Bayern Women, Georgia Stanway not only made history but also stole our hearts. She matured into a top European player in Munich and played a key role in the club’s success in recent years with her commitment and character.”
Rech acknowledged the discussions regarding Stanway’s future, noting that her desire to seek new challenges was understandable. “We talked a lot and openly about her future, and when she told us that she now wanted to try something new, her reasons were completely understandable. We thank her for the time we spent together and wish her all the best for the future. But we still have a few months left, and we’ll make them as successful as possible together.”
As the summer transfer window approaches, Arsenal’s pursuit of Stanway could significantly influence both the club’s strategy and the WSL landscape. With her proven track record and experience, Stanway would undoubtedly bolster Arsenal’s midfield, enhancing their competitive edge in domestic and European competitions.
