Askeaton Pool Reopens After €2.8 Million Renovation
The Askeaton Pool and Leisure Centre officially reopened on March 18, 2024, following a significant renovation aimed at addressing ongoing flood damage and modernizing the facility. The reopening ceremony was officiated by Patrick O’Donovan, the Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, who highlighted the importance of such community facilities.
Originally opened in 2008, the centre faced persistent flooding due to the River Deel overflowing its banks, which caused repeated damage to its plant room. To combat these issues, a thorough review was conducted, leading to the elevation of the plant room floor and the complete replacement of all mechanical and electrical systems. This ensures that the centre is now better protected against future flooding incidents.
The renovation project received financial backing of €1,265,750 from the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund, with an equal contribution from Limerick City and County Council. This brought the total investment to approximately €2.8 million, demonstrating a strong commitment to enhancing local infrastructure. The upgrades also included improvements to the pool facilities, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, and gym, alongside general repairs throughout the building.
Modern Facilities with Sustainable Energy Solutions
In addition to structural upgrades, new sustainable energy systems have been implemented. These include air-to-water heating, rooftop solar panels, and a biogas-fired heating system, all designed to reduce the centre’s environmental impact. The renovation was executed by Martins Construction Ltd, with design services provided by PUNCH Consulting Engineers and Don O’Malley & Partners.
The facility is now operated by Swim Ireland and is managed locally by a newly established team, creating more than 20 jobs, including positions for lifeguards and management staff. Membership and pay-as-you-go options are available, making the facility accessible to a wider community.
Local leaders expressed their enthusiasm about the reopening. John Moran, the Mayor of Limerick, stated that the event underscores the significance of investing in modern and accessible community facilities. Minister O’Donovan added that the project exemplifies successful collaboration between government bodies, the council, and the local community.
Community groups and local representatives have welcomed the reopening, viewing it as a substantial boost for the town of Askeaton. The renovation not only enhances recreational opportunities but also strengthens the social fabric of the area by providing a hub for community engagement and physical activity.
