Liverpool Parade Attacker Sentenced to Over 21 Years in Prison
A man has been sentenced to 21 years and six months in prison for injuring 134 people by driving his car into crowds at Liverpool’s Premier League victory parade. Paul Doyle, 54, lost control of his vehicle while attempting to reach friends at the celebration on May 26, 2023. He drove his Ford Galaxy directly into supporters making their way home from the event, resulting in numerous injuries.
During the incident, which occurred around 18:00 local time, dashcam footage revealed the chaos as fans were thrown onto the bonnet of the vehicle or fell beneath it. The crowd had gathered on Water Street, which was closed to traffic at the time. Doyle was heard shouting at pedestrians to “move” as he accelerated through the throngs of people.
Initially, Doyle denied 31 charges related to the attack. However, just before the prosecution was set to present its case, he changed his pleas to guilty. He admitted to dangerous driving, affray, and multiple counts of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, among other offenses. The victims ranged in age from six months to 77 years.
Judge Condemns Actions as “Inexplicable”
Sentencing judge Andrew Menary KC described Doyle’s actions as stemming from “inexplicable and undiluted fury.” He expressed disbelief at how anyone could drive a vehicle into a crowd of pedestrians with such a lack of regard for human life. The judge stated, “Your actions caused horror and devastation on a scale not previously encountered by this court.”
Doyle’s reckless behavior included overtaking other vehicles and running a red light. Witnesses reported that he drove down Dale Street, showing no signs of slowing despite the crowd. The footage captured him using abusive language as families scrambled to protect their children from harm.
The car was finally brought to a stop when fan Dan Barr intervened, climbing into the vehicle to shift the gear into park mode. Despite Doyle’s attempts to accelerate, the car, with people trapped underneath, could not move further.
Investigation Reveals No Evidence of Threat
In subsequent interviews, Doyle claimed he acted out of panic after seeing someone with a knife, yet police investigations found no evidence substantiating this claim. CCTV footage and witness statements contradicted his narrative, showing no signs of any weapon in the area. Additionally, investigators confirmed that Doyle was neither under the influence of alcohol nor drugs, and there were no mechanical defects with the vehicle.
James Allison from the Crown Prosecution Service Mersey-Cheshire commented on the case, stating that Doyle’s actions resulted from a loss of temper that led to devastating consequences for many individuals and families.
Detective Chief Inspector John Fitzgerald remarked on the incident’s sheer recklessness, emphasizing that Doyle’s disregard for the safety of others, particularly children, was incomprehensible. He noted that it was sheer luck that no lives were lost that day.
The sentencing serves as a grim reminder of the potential consequences of reckless driving, particularly in environments where large crowds gather for celebrations. The impact of Doyle’s actions will resonate within the community for years to come, as many continue to recover from the traumatic event.
