Lossiemouth secured a notable victory in the December Hurdle at Leopardstown, overcoming a strong challenge from Brighterdaysahead. Trained by Willie Mullins, Lossiemouth emerged as the dominant contender, having previously won the Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown last month. The mare entered the race as the 4-6 favourite, aiming for her ninth Grade One victory with Paul Townend in the saddle.

Brighterdaysahead, who had previously claimed this race by an impressive 30 lengths, was returning after a delayed season due to an autumn setback. With odds of 5-2, she aimed to defend her crown under the guidance of Gordon Elliott and Jack Kennedy. As the race unfolded, it became clear that the rivalry between these two exceptional mares would take center stage.

Early in the contest, Brighterdaysahead’s stablemate, Casheldale Lad, set a brisk pace. However, it was Anzadam, another runner from Mullins’ stable, who surged into the lead under Patrick Mullins. Despite his strong start, Anzadam faltered as the race progressed, leaving Lossiemouth and Brighterdaysahead to battle it out for the win. Ultimately, it was Lossiemouth who showcased her fitness and determination, crossing the finish line a length ahead.

Mullins reflected on the race, stating, “Paul had to go with Anzadam… he wasn’t going to be doing anything wrong going with him.” He expressed confidence that both mares would return for the upcoming Dublin Racing Festival, noting the limited options available for horses of their caliber. He also praised Anzadam’s potential, suggesting that he could be a Grade One contender if managed correctly.

Following this victory, Lossiemouth remains the second favourite for the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, with odds of 3-1, trailing only behind the 13-8 market leader, Sir Gino. In contrast, Brighterdaysahead’s odds have shifted to 14-1 after her commendable performance in this race, despite disappointing in previous Cheltenham appearances.

Reflecting on the victory, Townend remarked, “She was brilliant… I wanted to mark him and try to cover all bases.” He praised Lossiemouth’s reliability and performance, stating, “She’s a mighty mare and we are lucky to have her.”

Elliott expressed his satisfaction with Brighterdaysahead’s performance, saying, “I’m absolutely thrilled. I was more proud of her than anything all week.” He acknowledged her need for the race and expressed enthusiasm for a rematch at the Irish Champion Hurdle.

As both horses prepare for their next challenges, the anticipation for the Dublin Racing Festival builds, promising to showcase the exceptional talents of these two outstanding competitors.
