Loughrea manager Tommy Kelly has announced the club’s intention to appeal the red card issued to midfielder Cullen Killeen during their recent All-Ireland club Senior Hurling Championship (SHC) semi-final against Slaughtneil. Killeen was dismissed in the 62nd minute of the match, which took place at Parnell Park, following an off-the-ball incident with Brendan Rogers. This suspension could prevent Killeen from participating in the All-Ireland final against Ballygunner, scheduled for the weekend of January 17-18, 2024.

Referee Johnny Murphy indicated that Killeen had made a swipe during the altercation, which led to his dismissal. The decision sparked outrage among Loughrea supporters, who voiced their displeasure as the final whistle blew, despite the team’s commanding victory of 2-22 to 0-15. Loughrea accumulated five yellow cards throughout the match, contributing to a tense atmosphere.

Kelly expressed his strong belief that Killeen’s actions did not warrant a red card. “Oh, 100 per cent,” he stated. “For me, he was trying to release himself; he got in a tangle and tried to release himself. There was no major strike; it would be a sin if he lost out on an All-Ireland final.” Kelly emphasized Killeen’s character, describing him as a young player of only 19 years who plays without malice.

The incident overshadowed a strong performance by Loughrea, and emotions ran high in the aftermath. Killeen, who was recognized as the man of the match by TG4, appeared visibly distraught as celebrations began. Loughrea full-back Johnny Coen echoed Kelly’s sentiments, indicating that many observers felt the red card was unjustified. “I think everyone in the whole place was absolutely disgusted with the decision,” Coen commented. “He was outstanding. He wears his heart on his sleeve.”

Support for Loughrea’s appeal may come from an unexpected source. Paul McCormack, manager of Slaughtneil, hinted at potential backing for Killeen. “It’s harsh for the individual concerned, Cullen Killeen; he’s a good player,” he noted. McCormack suggested that their club would consider supporting the appeal, emphasizing the need for common sense in the situation.

Following Loughrea’s victory, they now face the challenge of preparing for the All-Ireland final while navigating the GAA’s disciplinary process. Meanwhile, Ballygunner secured their place in the final by defeating St Martin’s of Wexford 0-19 to 0-10 in the second semi-final. Despite trailing at halftime, Ballygunner rallied in the second half, showcasing resilience that coach Jason Ryan noted was crucial to their success.

Ryan expressed relief at advancing to the final, highlighting the importance of strong performances in high-pressure situations. “We are used to being in different situations where you are being challenged,” he said. “Certainly, the first half was an unbelievable battle, so we were lucky to start the second half very strong.”

As both teams prepare for the upcoming festive season, the focus will increasingly turn to the All-Ireland final. In a separate note, the replay of the All-Ireland senior camogie club final between Athenry and St Finbarr’s has been confirmed for Semple Stadium on January 3, 2024, at 17:15.
