Shelbourne Secures Key Goalkeeper Wessel Speel for 2026 Season
Shelbourne has bolstered its squad for the upcoming season by confirming the return of goalkeeper Wessel Speel on loan for the 2026 campaign. Speel, who made a significant impact during his previous stint at the club, will bring his skills back to Tolka Park after initially joining from MLS side Minnesota United.
Speel, aged 24, impressed fans and management alike during his time at Shelbourne, where he maintained an impressive record of six clean sheets in just 17 appearances. His arrival midway through the last season came at a crucial time, as regular starter Conor Kearns was sidelined due to injuries. Kearns has since moved on loan to Premier Division rivals Dundalk.
Speel Excited for Return
The goalkeeper expressed his enthusiasm about rejoining the team, stating, “I’m very excited to be back and to start winning games in front of our fans. We finished Europe and the league with great momentum last year, and I’m looking forward to building on that together.” His positive outlook reflects the club’s ambitions as they prepare for a competitive season ahead.
Head coach Joey O’Brien also shared his delight regarding Speel’s return, noting, “We are delighted to get Wes back in for the 2026 season. The impact he had on the team when he came in was massive. He brought a real calmness and quality to the squad during his time with us, and he fit into the group straight away.” O’Brien’s comments underscore the pivotal role Speel played in the team’s performance last year.
Team Management Commends Speel’s Impact
Technical director Luke Byrne highlighted the goalkeeper’s eagerness to return, stating, “It’s brilliant news that Wessel is returning on loan for the 2026 season. He made a hugely positive impact on the team when he joined last July. He was very keen to return and is determined to help the team be successful this season.” Byrne also acknowledged the efforts of goalkeeper coach Paul Skinner, whose relationship with Speel contributed to the goalkeeper’s decision to come back.
With his return, Shelbourne aims to build on the momentum generated from their recent performances, particularly during their European campaign. The club is grateful to Minnesota United for facilitating this loan, allowing Speel to continue his development while competing in the League of Ireland.
As the 2026 season approaches, fans are eager to see how Speel’s contributions will shape the team’s aspirations. His commitment signals a promising chapter for Shelbourne, who are focused on achieving success in both domestic and European competitions.
