Tragedy Strikes at Kempton Park as Three Horses Die in Races

The Lanzarote Hurdle meeting at Kempton Park on January 6, 2024, was marred by tragedy as three horses lost their lives during the event. Among them was Kalif Du Berlais, a Grade One winner co-owned by former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson. The horse suffered a fatal injury after parting ways with jockey Harry Cobden during the Coral Silviniaco Conti Chase.

Kalif Du Berlais sustained a broken shoulder after falling awkwardly and could not be saved despite immediate veterinary assistance. Trainer Paul Nicholls expressed his sorrow, describing the incident as “a real kick in the teeth” and a “sad day.” He reflected on the potential the horse possessed, stating, “He was just showing his class today, he jumped and travelled well.” Nicholls noted the emotional impact on the entire team, including the staff member responsible for Kalif Du Berlais’s care, saying, “You hate to see that happen.”

Two Additional Fatalities

The day’s events were further overshadowed by the loss of two other horses. During the Coral “Daily Rewards Shaker” Handicap Chase, Peso, trained by Jonjo O’Neill and his son AJ O’Neill, suffered an untreatable injury while on the flat. The veterinary team deemed euthanasia the most humane option for the horse’s welfare.

In a separate incident, Wertpol, who was competing in a juvenile hurdle, fell at the final hurdle and sustained fatal injuries. Trainer Harry Derham expressed his devastation on social media, describing Wertpol as a “bright talent” who had quickly endeared himself to the team. Derham lamented the loss felt by the horse’s ownership group, the Heart Of The South syndicate, noting, “Racing at times can be a painful sport and today has been a tough day for a number of connections. A day to forget.”

Statements from Kempton Park and Regulatory Bodies

A spokesperson for Kempton Park provided details about the incidents, confirming that all three horses received prompt veterinary care. The spokesperson conveyed condolences to the connections of the deceased horses, stating, “All of us at Kempton Park care deeply about the welfare of all racehorses.”

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) also released a statement, offering sympathy to everyone involved. The BHA indicated that it would conduct a thorough review of the incidents as part of its fatality review process. They emphasized that each injury occurred under different circumstances, and no common factors have been identified at this time. The BHA stated, “As is the case where there is more than one fatality at a single race meeting, the BHA will also initiate its additional review process to assess all relevant factors.”
