82-Year-Old James O’Reilly Graduates from DCU, Inspires Many
UPDATE: In a heartwarming turn of events, 82-year-old James O’Reilly has officially graduated with a BA in English and History from Dublin City University (DCU), proving it is never too late to pursue one’s dreams. This milestone was celebrated at the university’s October 2023 Graduation Ceremony held at the Helix in Dublin.
James O’Reilly’s journey back to education has captured the hearts of many, as he became one of the oldest graduates in DCU’s history. As he prepared for the ceremony, James expressed his nerves, stating, “You know, I’m old enough to have more sense!” This candid remark resonated with graduates and attendees alike, emphasizing his unique perspective on education.
After the loss of his wife seven years ago, James struggled with depression. With encouragement from his sons, he decided to pursue his lifelong passion for literature and history. “The lads persuaded me to do something that would interest me to occupy my time,” he shared. His determination led him to achieve a 2.1 degree, a remarkable accomplishment at any age.
James previously earned a Master’s in Information Studies but regards his latest degree as particularly meaningful. It reflects not just his academic interests but also his resilience and commitment to personal growth. “This degree means a lot to me,” he stated, highlighting his deep-rooted love for the arts.
What’s next for James? Although some faculty members have encouraged him to consider a PhD, he plans to take a year off to contemplate his options. “Certainly not going to have a career!” he humorously remarked, showcasing his light-hearted approach to life after graduation.
Since the announcement of his graduation, social media has flooded with congratulatory messages. Comments such as “This is beautiful” and “Fabulous—congratulations James!” reflect the widespread admiration for his inspiring story.
James O’Reilly’s graduation is a testament to the idea that education is a lifelong journey. As over 4,600 graduates walked the stage at this year’s DCU ceremony, his story stands out as a beacon of hope and inspiration for many looking to pursue their dreams, regardless of age.
Stay tuned for updates on James’s next steps and the impact of his journey on others. This incredible achievement not only highlights the importance of education but also the strength of the human spirit.
