Brigitte Bardot, Iconic French Star and Activist, Dies at 91
BREAKING: French screen legend and animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot has died at the age of 91, as confirmed by her family on July 16, 2025. Bardot, known for her role in the iconic film And God Created Woman, passed away in her home in Paris, marking the end of an era for both cinema and animal advocacy.
Bardot became an international sex symbol following her breakout role in the 1956 film, which was directed by her then-husband Roger Vadim. Her portrayal of a liberated woman in Saint Tropez catapulted her to fame, making her a defining figure of 20th-century cinema. For over two decades, she epitomized the “sex kitten” image, captivating audiences around the globe.
In the early 1970s, Bardot shocked fans by retiring from acting to focus on animal rights activism. She founded the Brigitte Bardot Foundation in 1986 and became a prominent voice against animal cruelty, engaging in protests and writing letters to world leaders about various animal welfare issues. However, her activism was often marred by controversial statements regarding ethnic minorities and her support for the far-right Front National party, leading to multiple convictions for inciting racial hatred.
Born in 1934 in a traditional Catholic family in Paris, Bardot showed early promise as a dancer and model. Her modeling career began when she appeared on the cover of Elle at just 15, eventually leading to her first film roles. By the time she starred in The Truth and Contempt in the 1960s, she had already become a cultural icon. Her influence extended beyond film, inspiring music legends like John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
Despite her fame, Bardot became disillusioned with the film industry, stating in a 1996 interview, “The madness which surrounded me always seemed unreal.” She stepped away from the spotlight in 1973 after her last film, The Edifying and Joyous Story of Colinot, choosing instead to dedicate her life to animal rights.
Bardot’s activism was not without controversy. Her views on immigration and Islam, particularly her comments regarding France’s Muslim population, drew significant backlash and legal consequences. In 2003, she published a book that further fueled her controversial stance on various social issues, leading to legal actions against her.
Throughout her life, Bardot was married four times, including to Vadim and Bernard d’Ormale, a former adviser to Jean-Marie Le Pen. As fans and admirers mourn her passing, her complex legacy as a film icon and a polarizing political figure will undoubtedly spark discussions around her life and impact.
WHAT’S NEXT: Memorial services for Bardot are expected to be organized in the coming days, as tributes pour in from around the world. Fans are encouraged to share their memories and reflections on her significant contributions to both cinema and animal rights.
In the wake of Bardot’s death, her family has requested privacy and has expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love from fans and supporters. Bardot leaves behind a complicated yet fascinating legacy that continues to resonate today.
