UPDATE: Catherine Connolly is set to be inaugurated as the 10th President of Ireland today, marking a significant moment for the nation. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 12:00 PM in Dublin Castle, just weeks after Connolly’s decisive victory in the presidential election, where she succeeded Michael D Higgins, who served for 14 years.

The inauguration, held in the historic St Patrick’s Hall, will be the 14th of its kind since Ireland’s first president, Douglas Hyde, took office 80 years ago. This ceremonial event will witness Connolly officially take the oath of office, a crucial step in her new role as Uachtarán na hÉireann.

The ceremony will commence as Connolly’s motorcade arrives at Dublin Castle shortly before noon, entering through the Cork Hill gate. She will be welcomed by the Tánaiste and escorted into the State Apartments, culminating in a formal swearing-in ceremony.

In a ceremonial highlight, Chief Justice Donal O’Donnell will administer the presidential oath, requiring Connolly to pledge to uphold the Constitution and serve the people of Ireland diligently. The oath, required by Article 12.8 of the Irish Constitution, is a solemn commitment to the nation.

Following her oath, the newly inaugurated President will address the crowd, with the Taoiseach expected to deliver a speech as well. The Army Band No.1 will perform the national anthem as Connolly exits the hall, leading to a procession to Áras an Uachtaráin.

Approximately 350 guests are expected to attend, including family members, parliamentarians, and diplomatic representatives. Connolly’s husband, Brian McEnery, and their sons will be in attendance, alongside the outgoing President Higgins and his wife, Sabina Coyne.

As part of the celebration, a State Reception will be held later today at 6:00 PM in the State Apartments, with expectations of an elaborate affair reminiscent of previous receptions, which have hosted over 1,700 guests.

Stay tuned for live updates and coverage of this historic inauguration, capturing the emotions and significance of Connolly’s ascension to the presidency.
