Clarinbridge Wins Big at 2025 Pride of Place Awards!
UPDATE: Clarinbridge has just been crowned the winner of the ‘300 – 1,000 Population’ category at the 2025 IPB Pride of Place Awards, marking a significant achievement for the south Galway village. This prestigious accolade was announced during a ceremony held earlier this week, highlighting the village’s exceptional community development efforts.
Nominated by Galway County Council, Clarinbridge excelled in an all-island competition that celebrates voluntary groups dedicated to improving local areas through collaboration and civic engagement. The awards, now in their 23rd year, are organized by Co-operation Ireland and sponsored by IPB Insurance.
The Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council, Cllr David Collins, expressed pride in Clarinbridge’s victory, stating, “This win is a fantastic endorsement of the dedication and creativity shown by its residents.” He emphasized the village’s commitment to building a vibrant, inclusive community and recognized the pivotal role of the Marconi Men’s Shed, whose efforts in promoting wellbeing set a powerful example.
Established in 1979, the Clarinbridge Tidy Towns group has been instrumental in enhancing both the physical and social environment of the village. The group’s initiatives include maintaining local landmarks like The Green and developing walking trails, showcasing a dedication to heritage and environmental stewardship.
Judges praised Clarinbridge for its collaborative partnerships with organizations such as the Clarinbridge Men’s Shed and SCCUL Sanctuary, alongside community events like Clarinbridge Market Day and Halloween on the Green.
Liam Conneally, Chief Executive of Galway County Council, called the recognition a proud moment for the county, stating, “Clarinbridge’s success is a testament to the strength of community spirit in our towns and villages.” He congratulated all involved, including the Marconi Men’s Shed in Clifden, which represented Galway County in the ‘Community Wellbeing’ category. Though it did not win, the group was acknowledged for its innovative support for male family carers and health promotion in the Connemara region.
Representatives from the Clarinbridge Tidy Towns group, Ronan Kavanagh and Mary Daly, attended the awards ceremony. “We are absolutely thrilled and deeply honored that Clarinbridge has been named overall winner of its category,” said Ms. Daly, highlighting the various initiatives that embody the village’s spirit of collaboration and pride.
Mr. Kavanagh added, “This award belongs to everyone who has ever picked up a paintbrush or volunteered.” Their sentiments echo the collective effort that defines Clarinbridge’s community.
Earlier this September, the IPB Pride of Place judges visited both Clarinbridge and Clifden as part of the evaluation process, engaging with local representatives and touring community projects. Michael Owens, Director of Services with responsibility for Corporate Services and Rural, Community & Tourism Development & Integration, noted, “Galway’s successful participation in Pride of Place highlights the scale and breadth of activity in our communities.”
The victory further solidifies Galway’s impressive track record in the Pride of Place competition, following last year’s recognition of Kinvara Tidy Towns and Williamstown as runners-up in their categories, and the win of Creggs Rural Development Group in 2023 for Climate Action and Biodiversity.
As Clarinbridge celebrates this monumental achievement, the community’s commitment to collaboration, resilience, and local pride shines as an inspiring example for others. Residents and supporters are encouraged to share the news, amplifying the spirit of community that defines this village.
Stay tuned for more updates as Clarinbridge continues to make strides in community development and engagement!
