Cockhill Celtic Joins New FAI National League in Historic Move
UPDATE: Cockhill Celtic has just been confirmed as one of the clubs participating in the newly established FAI National League, marking a significant milestone for grassroots football in Ireland. Effective Autumn 2026, this new third-tier league will include 15 clubs, with Cockhill Celtic representing Donegal alongside Bonagee United and Letterkenny Rovers.
This groundbreaking league creates an unprecedented pathway from grassroots football directly to the League of Ireland. Gavin Cullen, the manager of Cockhill Celtic, expressed his excitement over this historic inclusion, stating, “It’s a fantastic opportunity for our players and the community. We are thrilled to be part of this new chapter.”
Starting from the 2027 season, the league will feature a promotion system, allowing the winners of the North and South divisions to compete in a Play-Off Final for the title of FAI National League champions. If the champions meet licensing requirements, they will face the bottom team in the League of Ireland’s First Division in a crucial Promotion/Relegation Play-Off.
Cockhill Celtic’s involvement in the FAI National League not only elevates the club but also enhances the competitive landscape of football in the region. This new tier aims to foster talent and provide players with more opportunities to advance their careers.
As the football community anticipates the kickoff in Autumn 2026, fans and players alike are eager to see how this initiative will transform the landscape of Irish football. Keep an eye on Cockhill Celtic as they prepare for this exciting journey ahead!
