Derry Man Fined £50 for Importing Flick Knife by Mistake
UPDATE: A 57-year-old man from Derry has been fined £50 after a court ruled he made a “genuine mistake” in importing a flick knife. The incident, which occurred on June 14, 2025, highlights the ongoing issues surrounding weapon imports and the importance of understanding regulations.
During a hearing at Derry Magistrates’ Court earlier today, Steven Millar, residing in Ebrington Park, represented himself and pleaded guilty to one charge of importing a weapon. The case drew immediate attention when the Border Force intercepted a parcel addressed to Millar, discovering it contained a flick knife.
Millar explained to the court that he had ordered the item believing it to be a wood carving tool, asserting he was unaware it was categorized as a weapon. “If I had received the parcel and realized what it was, I would have handed it in to police,” he stated, emphasizing his lack of intent to violate the law.
District Judge Oonagh Mullan acknowledged the circumstances surrounding the case, expressing that the offence appeared to be a genuine mistake. She imposed the £50 fine while underscoring the importance of compliance with import laws to ensure public safety.
This case serves as a reminder for all individuals regarding the legal implications of importing items and the potential consequences of misunderstandings in product classifications. With the ongoing scrutiny of weapon imports, officials are urging the public to remain vigilant and informed.
As this story develops, residents are encouraged to stay updated on local news regarding import regulations and safety measures.
