Derry’s Christmas Spirit Dimmed by Vandalism of Iconic Decoration
UPDATE: An act of vandalism has led to the removal of a beloved Christmas decoration from Guildhall Square in Derry, causing disappointment among residents. The Derry City and Strabane District Council confirmed this morning, December 24, 2025, that the festive reindeer was damaged overnight, highlighting the urgent need for community respect during this festive season.
The council expressed their deep disappointment over the incident, stating that the festive decorations are vital for fostering a welcoming atmosphere for both locals and visitors. “It’s extremely disappointing that damage to a public decoration has resulted in its removal, particularly at a time when many take pride in our city and the festive celebrations,” a council spokesperson stated.
Officials are calling for greater respect for shared public spaces, emphasizing that these decorations are meant for everyone to enjoy. “We appeal to the community to cherish and protect our local facilities so they can be enjoyed by all,” they added.
The damage to the reindeer represents a larger issue of vandalism affecting community spirit, particularly during the holiday season when decorations symbolize joy and togetherness. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity and to take pride in maintaining the festive décor that uplifts the community.
As Derry continues to celebrate the holiday season, the council is working to restore the festive spirit, urging all citizens to come together and respect the shared spaces that contribute to the city’s charm. Residents and visitors alike are hoping for a swift resolution to this unfortunate event.
Stay tuned for updates as the Derry City and Strabane District Council works to address this act of vandalism and restore the festive atmosphere in Guildhall Square.
