URGENT UPDATE: A motorist has been clocked driving at an alarming 207 km/h in a 100 km/h zone just outside Limerick City. This shocking incident occurred on the N18 in Ballinacurra Weston as part of a heightened road safety campaign launched by An Garda Síochána on December 1, 2025.

The Christmas road safety initiative aims to curb dangerous driving behaviors and will run until January 5, 2026. Alarmingly, other drivers have also been caught speeding, including one at 118 km/h in a 50 km/h zone in Dublin 7 and another at 140 km/h in a 60 km/h zone in County Donegal.

In a tragic reminder of the risks involved, the latest data shows there were three fatalities on Irish roads during the fourth week of the operation, accompanied by eight serious collisions that left many injured. An Garda Síochána has conducted nearly 2,100 checkpoints over the past week, revealing a startling rise in dangerous driving behaviors.

During this period, 149 arrests were made for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, while over 4,600 drivers were detected for speeding violations. Authorities also seized more than 435 vehicles under the Road Traffic Act, 1961.

In addition, approximately 150 Fixed Charge Notices were issued for mobile phone use while driving, and around 45 notices for seat belt infractions. The current road safety appeal warns of the dire consequences of impaired driving, with 189 fatalities recorded on Irish roads this year alone.

Officials urge all road users to drive responsibly during this festive season. “We must all take extra care on the roads,” said a spokesperson from An Garda Síochána. The appeal is clear: slow down, pay attention, and prioritize safety.

As the campaign continues, drivers are reminded that their actions can have devastating consequences. The urgency for safe driving practices has never been more critical. Stay tuned for further updates as this developing story unfolds.
