Elbląg Flood Alert: Water Levels Surge, Emergency Services Mobilize

UPDATE: A flood alert has been urgently declared in the Polish city of Elbląg as water levels in the Elbląg River have surged past the critical threshold of 590 cm. The city’s mayor, Michał Missan, announced the alert late Saturday night as rising waters pose an imminent threat to local residents.

The alarming rise in water levels is attributed to a “backwater” effect caused by strong north-westerly winds, which are pushing water from the nearby Vistula Lagoon back into the riverbed. This natural phenomenon significantly escalates the risk of flooding in vulnerable areas along the river, prompting immediate action from local authorities.

In response to the developing situation, emergency services have deployed flood-control barriers in high-risk zones, specifically on Zygmunt August Boulevard and Warszawska Street. Officials are closely monitoring water levels at three gauges throughout the Elbląg area, all of which have exceeded warning thresholds, indicating the seriousness of the flood threat.

Mayor Missan emphasized that emergency services are on high alert, stating, “All services remain on standby as we continuously monitor the hydrological situation.” He urged residents to exercise extreme caution and to contact emergency services at 112 or the 24-hour Crisis Management Centre at 55 239-30-40 and 55 239-30-41 if assistance is needed.

The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) has also issued warnings about strong winds in the region, which are expected to persist for several hours. Forecasters predict icy and severe weather conditions that could hinder rescue operations and increase risks for residents.

While no evacuation orders or large-scale flooding alerts have been issued as of yet, the situation is fluid, and local services are prepared for further interventions if conditions worsen. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant as the city navigates this critical situation.
