EU Council President Confirms Russian Drones Intruded During Zelenskyy Visit
UPDATE: The EU Council President, Antonio Costa, has confirmed that Russian drones entered Irish airspace during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit last week. The alarming incident unfolded as Zelenskyy arrived in Ireland on March 13, 2023, with reports indicating four unidentified military-style drones followed his flight path near Dublin Airport.
During a press conference in Dublin on March 14, Costa labeled the drone breach as “another example of the hybrid attacks from Russia” targeting European nations. He emphasized the ongoing threats faced by EU countries, stating, “It’s not new, but we are managing these threats now.”
The Russian Embassy in Ireland has vehemently denied any connection to the incident, dismissing claims as “rumours and innuendo.” An embassy spokesperson told TG4’s 7LÁ, “We categorically reject any attempt to portray this incident in terms of possible Russian involvement – there is absolutely no basis to that.”
In response to the embassy’s denials, Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin expressed skepticism, reminding the public that this is the same ambassador who inaccurately assured that Russia had no intentions of invading Ukraine. Martin stated, “I simply do not share the embassy’s view,” aligning with Costa’s assessment that the drones’ presence contributes to an “established pattern of similar disruptive incidents” across Europe.
This incident raises significant concerns about airspace security and the implications of Russian aggression within EU borders. As tensions escalate, European leaders are urged to address these violations and enhance coordination against potential threats.
Authorities are now investigating the drone activity, examining its implications for national security and international relations. Observers expect a heightened response from EU member states as they prepare for future engagements amid these continuing threats.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as officials work to address the implications of this serious breach.
