Farmer Challenges Taoiseach on Milk Prices at AGM in Limerick

BREAKING: At the ICMSA’s 75th Annual General Meeting in Limerick earlier today, farmer Denis Drennan confronted Taoiseach Micheal Martin, highlighting the urgent crisis facing Ireland’s dairy farmers. Drennan condemned the growing influence of “self-appointed” NGOs that he claims are obstructing agricultural progress, warning that their actions are leading to a detrimental “dog in the manger” mentality across the country.

Drennan’s remarks come as the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association (ICMSA) grapples with a staggering loss of €0.10 per litre in milk prices over just three months, pushing many farmers below production costs. He stated, “The rest of the dairy sector uses farmer-suppliers as their risk management tool,” emphasizing the need for systemic change to protect farmers’ livelihoods.

The AGM also addressed the Nitrates Derogation and the contentious Mercosur Agreement, with Drennan criticizing Ireland’s tepid response to the EU’s trade negotiations. “It is difficult to see Ireland’s opposition as anything but lacklustre,” he said, reinforcing the urgency for decisive action from the government.

As the meeting unfolded, Drennan urged Martin to recognize the genuine grassroots organizations represented by ICMSA members, who finance their own legal battles without state support when defending their interests. He argued that the current approach fails to respect the extensive consultations that precede governmental decisions, allowing NGOs to exploit legal loopholes at the taxpayers’ expense.

Drennan proposed the introduction of a farmer deposit scheme to help mitigate the financial impacts of fluctuating milk prices, potentially offering a lifeline to struggling farmers during lean years.

This critical dialogue raises immediate concerns for the agricultural sector, which is facing unprecedented challenges. As Ireland looks to stabilize its farming economy, all eyes will be on the government’s response following this urgent call to action.
