Flu Cases Surge in Ireland, Expected to Peak This Week

URGENT UPDATE: Flu cases in Ireland are surging, with projections indicating a peak this week as hospitals face overwhelming demand. The Health Service Executive (HSE) reports a staggering 3,287 flu cases confirmed for the week ending December 13, a sharp rise from just 41 cases in early October.

Authorities confirm that the flu season is now “very active,” with modeling suggesting a peak during Christmas week. HSE Chief Executive Bernard Gloster revealed that between 800 and 1,100 individuals could be hospitalized with flu at any given time during the height of the outbreak. “The latest modeling data indicates that the flu will peak Christmas week,” Gloster stated.

This surge comes amid already unprecedented pressure on hospitals. Emergency departments reported an average of more than 5,000 attendances per day in early December, significantly higher than the same period last year. Alongside the flu, other respiratory illnesses are on the rise, with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) cases jumping from 18 in early October to 435 by mid-December.

The HSE is urging the public to take precautions, especially with families gathering for Christmas, which heightens the risk for vulnerable populations. They recommend getting the seasonal flu vaccine, maintaining good hygiene, and staying home if feeling unwell. Individuals exhibiting flu symptoms are advised to avoid visiting vulnerable relatives in hospitals and care homes during this peak period.

Despite the rising flu cases, the HSE reports that trolley wait numbers have remained stable compared to 2023, a trend attributed to increased staffing and resources. However, the reality remains grim, with 17 deaths confirmed this winter due to influenza and 62 patients requiring intensive care.

Dr. Sean Underwood, an emergency medicine physician at Cork University Hospital, emphasized the urgency of the situation. He noted, “We are seeing a steady stream of patients across all ages with flu-like illnesses.” Dr. Underwood highlighted the concern over children, who are currently the most prolific transmitters of the virus, gathering with elderly relatives over the holidays.

Some hospitals have already implemented visitor restrictions to mitigate the spread of infection and protect at-risk patients. The HSE continues to recommend alternatives to emergency departments, including local GPs and pharmacies, particularly during this busy holiday season.

As the flu cases continue to rise, the health service remains at full capacity, with officials urging public cooperation to manage the seasonal surge effectively. Stay informed and take action to protect yourself and your loved ones during this critical time.
