Forensic Report Confirms Homicide in Kelly Lynch’s Death

A newly commissioned forensic report has determined that the death of Kelly Lynch, a 23-year-old woman found in a canal in Monaghan, was a homicide rather than an accident, contradicting earlier findings by law enforcement. Lynch was discovered in the Ulster Canal on March 17, 2024, approximately 30 hours after she was last seen following a night out.

The original investigation by Garda Síochána suggested that Lynch had fallen from a bridge, and authorities did not consider her death to be suspicious. However, the forensic report, funded by the Katie Trust, revealed that Lynch sustained a total of 93 injuries, including defensive wounds, indicating she was assaulted. It also noted that some injuries occurred post-mortem and that no water was found in her lungs.

The findings have prompted Lynch’s family to call for a comprehensive murder investigation, expressing concerns about the initial handling of the case, including delays in preserving the scene and securing crucial CCTV footage. The family sought assistance from the Katie Trust last summer. This charity focuses on investigating so-called “hidden homicides,” which involve cases where the circumstances of a person’s death raise suspicions.

James Brannigan, a retired detective with the Police Service of Northern Ireland and head of the Katie Trust, played a key role in obtaining the forensic report. He stated, “We consulted with a pathologist based in America, who has extensive experience and was trained in Ireland. He conducted an in-depth review of the injuries sustained by Kelly and provided us with detailed insights.”

Brannigan highlighted significant findings, including a fracture to Lynch’s T-10 vertebra and injuries to her head, which suggest third-party involvement. He expressed grave concerns regarding the nature of the injuries, stating, “There are numerous marks on her body which are not conducive with falling off a bridge or drowning. Defensive wounds further indicate she was attacked.”

The report’s conclusions have drawn attention from political leaders as well. Sinn Féin’s justice spokesperson, Matt Carthy, emphasized the need for a re-examination of the case and has requested a meeting between the Minister for Justice and Lynch’s family.

In response to the new evidence, Garda Síochána confirmed that a peer review of the original investigation is underway. They have urged anyone with information related to the case to come forward.
