Forest Playgrounds for Kids Announced by Minister Foley
URGENT UPDATE: A groundbreaking initiative to create forest playgrounds for children across the country has just been announced by Children’s Minister Norma Foley. This innovative plan aims to encourage outdoor play and interaction with nature, moving away from traditional park setups with slides and swings.
The initiative is part of a larger scheme funded by the Capital Grant Scheme for play and recreation under the Department of Children. Minister Foley emphasized the importance of this program, stating it will provide children with unique opportunities to engage with the natural environment. “Children will set up tents, build shelters with branches, and learn to navigate through forests using rope bridges,” she explained.
The program will not only focus on play but also incorporate educational elements, such as identifying plants and animals, crafting with natural materials, and storytelling. This approach aims to foster creativity, teamwork, and confidence among young participants.
This initiative has already shown promise; a pilot program conducted in Cork City demonstrated significant benefits. 3rd class children participated in weekly outdoor learning sessions in a local wooded area. Reports indicated improved school attendance, enhanced group identity, and boosted confidence among students.
Minister Foley highlighted the program’s potential to benefit children with limited access to green spaces. “The funding will enable local authorities to develop sites for these forest playgrounds, providing pre-school and primary school children with positive outdoor experiences,” she stated.
As part of the plan, facilities will also include maintenance for playgrounds and recreation areas, as well as dedicated hang-out spots for teenagers. Schools across the country will be able to utilize these forest playgrounds throughout the academic year.
Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting project unfolds, promising a new era of outdoor learning and fun for children nationwide. This initiative is set to transform how young people experience nature, paving the way for healthier, more active lifestyles.
