Gardaí Urge Homeowners to Boost Security as Nights Lengthen
UPDATE: As the nights grow longer, Gardaí are urgently urging homeowners to enhance their security measures to prevent potential burglaries. The winter phase of Operation Thor was just announced, targeting a rise in home break-ins during the darker evenings, especially in rural areas.
Authorities confirm that the most common time for burglaries occurs between 5pm and 11pm. A dark house signals to criminals that no one is home, making it an easy target. Sergeant Olivia Fleming, Crime Prevention Officer for Galway, stated, “No light means nobody is at home, and this provides an easy target for the opportunistic burglar.”
Since the launch of Operation Thor in 2015, residential burglaries have decreased by an impressive 75% during the winter months in Ireland. This proactive initiative is essential as daylight hours diminish, contrary to international trends that typically see an uptick in burglaries during winter.
With the clocks set to change at the end of the month, now is the time for homeowners to consider their security. “An Garda Síochána’s winter burglary message is ‘Lock Up and Light Up’,” Fleming emphasized. Keeping a light on or using a timer switch after 5pm can create the illusion that someone is home.
Amid rising energy costs, homeowners can opt for LED bulbs, which are more energy-efficient. Smart bulbs that connect to Wi-Fi offer convenience, allowing remote control via mobile apps. Fleming advises additional measures such as ensuring all doors and windows are secured with high-quality locks and keeping gates closed to deter unauthorized entry.
“Security is all about layers,” Fleming explained. “The first physical layer is your boundary wall, fence, and gate. Keeping gates closed is a great deterrent.” She also recommends using alarms or video doorbells as effective security measures.
Homeowners should be vigilant about valuables. Burglars typically target cash and expensive jewelry. “Do not keep large amounts of cash at home; store jewelry in a safe or safety deposit box,” Fleming urged.
For further assistance, the free Garda Property App allows users to catalogue personal belongings, making it easier to report stolen items. The app is available for download on both Android and iOS platforms.
As the winter months approach, implementing these strategies can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim of burglary. Follow Gardaí’s advice to ensure your home remains secure during this vulnerable time.
