Greenlanders Fear US Invasion Amid Trump’s Bold Claims

Greenlanders are expressing deep concern over the possibility of a United States invasion, following remarks made by President Donald Trump regarding the annexation of the Danish territory. Recently, Trump intensified his rhetoric, stating that he would pursue the annexation “the easy way” or “the hard way.” He has falsely claimed that Greenland is “covered with Russian and Chinese ships all over the place,” igniting fears among the local population.

In the capital city of Nuuk, residents voiced their overwhelming desire for autonomy, wishing to be left undisturbed by the world’s most powerful nation. Although Greenland is part of the Danish Realm, its relationship with mainland Denmark remains complex and fraught with historical grievances. Many locals still harbor resentment over Denmark’s treatment of native Greenlanders, yet there is a prevailing acknowledgment that full independence may not be feasible at this time.

Per Berthelsen, a longtime political figure in Greenland’s Democratic Party, articulated the sentiments of many residents. He emphasized that Greenlanders do not identify as Americans and that the majority do not feel Danish either. “When I started a rock band 55 years ago, I said I don’t accept that Danish people called us Northern Danes,” Berthelsen stated. “We are Greenlanders.” He expressed disillusionment regarding the United States, stating, “We really respected the States as being the guardians of democracy in the world. But now we experience that the strongest and biggest ally is threatening the smallest one without any military.”

Danish politicians are set to travel to Washington in an effort to persuade the Trump administration to adopt a more diplomatic approach towards Greenland. Berthelsen expressed hope that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio would engage in more constructive dialogue, urging him to refrain from threatening to annex or purchase Greenland.

The sentiment among Greenlanders is largely against becoming part of the United States, and there is also skepticism about remaining under Danish rule. Berthelsen noted that while he and many others would like to see the Danish flag removed from public spaces, the timing is critical. “We are 56,000 people with a very big and expensive country to run,” he remarked. “The biggest island in the world with a very limited economic freedom to be able to be independent.”

Many locals share Berthelsen’s pragmatic view. A resident named Dennis stated that he would not oppose the idea of the United States actively engaging with Greenland. “I’m open to what he’s doing because the world is changing, so we have to adapt,” he suggested. Dennis added that if Greenland does not align with the United States, it may have to consider Russia as an alternative.

Another resident criticized European nations for being relatively quiet on the issue, insisting that Greenland should have a voice in its own future. “Greenland is Greenland and they have to be answering to what they want to do,” she remarked.

A recent poll conducted in March 2023 revealed that 85% of Greenlanders oppose becoming part of the United States, with 9% undecided and 6% unsure. As Greenlanders navigate this precarious situation, the looming threat of external influence continues to weigh heavily on their collective consciousness.
