Home Care Assistants in Donegal Plan Industrial Action Next Month

Home Care Assistants in Donegal and four other counties are preparing to initiate industrial action next month if their employer, the Health Service Executive (HSE), does not engage in negotiations regarding their working conditions. A significant majority, specifically 95 percent, of the Siptu members employed in the Home Support Service have voted in favor of this action, which may include strikes.

The decision stems from the HSE’s failure to implement improvements to terms and conditions that were agreed upon eight years ago. According to the Union, this lack of progress has led to increasing frustration among workers, who feel their concerns have been ignored for too long.

Potential Impact on Services

If the proposed industrial action goes ahead, it could disrupt services in Donegal, Clare, Cork, Kerry, and Limerick. This would impact many vulnerable individuals who rely on home care assistance for daily support. Graham Macken, a Siptu Organiser, expressed that it is not too late for the HSE to avoid this situation through meaningful dialogue.

Macken emphasized the importance of addressing workers’ grievances to prevent disruption in essential services. “We are hopeful that the HSE will recognize the seriousness of this situation and come to the table for discussions,” he said.

The ongoing situation highlights broader issues within the home care sector, where staff members often face challenging working conditions and inadequate compensation. As negotiations loom, the outcome will likely set a precedent for similar discussions in the industry across Ireland.

The Home Support Service is vital for many families, and the potential for industrial action raises questions about the future of care available to those in need. As the deadline approaches, all eyes will be on the HSE’s response and whether they will engage with the concerns raised by their employees.
