Kilkenny Councillors Demand Action Against Reckless Contractors
UPDATE: Councillors in the Castlecomer Municipal District have urgently condemned the actions of contractors working for Kilkenny County Council, citing serious disruptions and distress for local residents. During the monthly meeting held in November 2023, Cllr Michael McCarthy highlighted the growing public outrage in the Lisdowney area due to ongoing ESB Grid Connection works.
Residents have faced unprecedented inconveniences, with reports indicating that some homeowners were left without vehicle access for days. Cllr McCarthy expressed his alarm, stating, “The inconvenience and lack of communication has been alarming… people have been prevented from gaining access to their own private homes.”
The council’s discussion comes amid escalating frustrations over the quality of work and the communication breakdown between contractors and the community. Cllr McCarthy called for an immediate halt on issuing new licenses to contractors until the local authority can assure improved work standards.
Fellow councillors echoed his sentiments. Cllr Michael Delaney criticized the “completely lacking” communication from contractors, while Cllr Mary Hilda Cavanagh described the situation as “appalling.” Cllr Pat Fitzpatrick went further, suggesting a “naughty list” for contractors who deliver subpar work.
In a response to the backlash, a spokesperson for Kilkenny County Council confirmed they had met with the contractors involved, emphasizing a renewed focus on communication moving forward.
This urgent situation sheds light on the critical need for accountability in local projects, as residents continue to voice their frustrations. The council’s actions, or lack thereof, will be closely monitored in the coming weeks as they address these pressing concerns.
Residents and community leaders are encouraged to share their experiences and insights as this story develops. The call for better contractor practices resonates beyond Kilkenny, as communities everywhere grapple with similar issues of public service and accountability.
Stay tuned for further updates as the situation unfolds.
