URGENT UPDATE: Kilkenny County Council has just confirmed ambitious plans to expand the city’s bus service with new routes and bus stop locations being analyzed for 2026. The proposed development includes a brand-new Park and Ride facility aimed at enhancing public transport accessibility in the region.

City officials are working diligently to implement this expansion, which could feature eight new bus shelters across Kilkenny. However, these plans are contingent upon securing funding and receiving approval from the National Transport Authority (NTA). This initiative comes six years after the successful launch of the city bus operation, which has seen significant usage among locals.

Currently, 47% of the local population relies on the KK2 service, while 53% utilize KK1. This data highlights the growing demand for improved public transport options within Kilkenny, prompting city-based councillors to advocate strongly for immediate action.

Cllr Sean Ó hArgain of the Labour party emphasized the urgency of this project, stating that “action needs to be taken as quickly as possible.” A phased strategy has already been agreed upon with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), focusing on implementing active travel measures, including cycling and walking options. This aspect of the project is currently in the options stage, with completion expected next year.

The council’s commitment to expanding the bus service is not only about improving transportation but also about enhancing the quality of life for Kilkenny residents. With plans to expedite the project, officials are set to begin a planning stage shortly.

Residents and commuters alike are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates as this project develops. The expansion of public transport services in Kilkenny is poised to have a significant positive impact on the community, making it easier and more efficient for people to navigate the city.
