Landslide in Kenya’s Rift Valley Claims 21 Lives, Over 1,000 Homes Destroyed
A devastating landslide struck Kenya’s western Rift Valley region on March 16, 2024, resulting in at least 21 fatalities and leaving more than 30 individuals unaccounted for. The disaster, triggered by heavy rains during the country’s ongoing short rain season, has destroyed over 1,000 homes in the hilly area of Chesongoch, located in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
The relentless rainfall has affected the region for several days, leading to mudslides that have caused widespread damage. Local authorities have reported that search and rescue operations continue, with teams working tirelessly despite the ongoing adverse weather conditions. Roads leading to affected areas have been cut off, complicating efforts to reach those in need.
In a response to the crisis, the government has airlifted 30 survivors with serious injuries to hospitals in nearby Eldoret City. Eyewitness accounts describe a terrifying scene; residents reported hearing a deafening noise as the ground gave way, prompting many to flee their homes in a panic.
Rescue teams are currently combing through the debris of collapsed structures, hoping to locate missing persons. The hilly terrain of Chesongoch has a history of landslides, with similarly tragic events recorded in 2010 and 2012, which resulted in numerous deaths. Furthermore, a shopping centre was washed away by floods in 2020, highlighting the area’s vulnerability to natural disasters.
Kipchumba Murkomen, Kenya’s Interior Minister, has stated that the government is actively seeking alternative settlement areas for those displaced by the landslide. This initiative aims to provide affected families with safer housing options in the wake of the disaster.
As recovery efforts continue, the focus remains on providing aid and support to the victims and their families during this challenging time. The Kenyan government, alongside disaster management agencies, is working to ensure that those impacted receive the necessary assistance to rebuild their lives after this tragic event.
