London Irish Vintage Day Surpasses £1 Million Fundraising Milestone

UPDATE: The London Irish Vintage Day has officially surpassed the remarkable milestone of £1 million in funds raised since its inception in 2011. This was confirmed during its latest annual event held on September 9, 2023, at the Tir Chonaill Gaels GAA Grounds in Greenford, where the atmosphere was electric and the support overwhelming.

The event featured a stellar lineup, including Derek Ryan, who returned to headline the entertainment. Other performers included the London-Irish band Hungry Grass, Johnny McGovern, Slim Attraction, and former Lord of the Dance star Niamh Shevlin. With additional acts like Three Fold and Lucky Plucker, the day was filled with music, dance, and community spirit.

Organiser Brendan Vaughan expressed his gratitude, stating, “It was a fabulous day with a fabulous crowd. Without the help we get, we couldn’t afford to run this day.” Vaughan also emphasized the essential role of the committee in reaching this fundraising milestone, highlighting past charities, including St Luke’s Hospice, which received £32,000 in the event’s inaugural year.

The event’s success is not just about the money raised; it also fosters community and raises awareness for critical charities. This year’s beneficiaries included St Luke’s Hospice, Stamp Out Suicide, HCPT, and Air Ambulance Northern Ireland.

Next Steps: Vaughan confirmed that the goal is to keep the momentum going. “Everybody enjoyed themselves… That’s what it’s about,” he remarked. Derek Ryan echoed these sentiments, recalling his early days playing in London pubs and expressing his desire to return for future events. “I always feel very much at home here,” Ryan said, reflecting on the warmth of the community.

Community fundraiser Kate Gammell from St Luke’s highlighted the importance of local support, stating, “We feel privileged to be chosen once again by the Vintage team.”

Colm Farrell from Stamp Out Suicide stressed the importance of open discussions around mental health, saying, “If you’re concerned for somebody, don’t be afraid to ask them if they’re having suicidal thoughts.”

The support from local charities showcases the event’s broader impact, not just in fundraising but in raising awareness of vital services. James Teague from HCPT shared how their work changes lives, particularly for disadvantaged young people.

As the event concluded, Vaughan and the committee were already brainstorming ways to enhance next year’s festivities. “We want to keep it fresh, but anytime they want us back, we’re open to coming back,” Ryan stated, solidifying his commitment to the event and its cause.
