Luas Red Line to Reopen by November End After Major Fire
UPDATE: The Luas Red Line service between Connolly and The Point is set to reopen at the end of November 2023, following a devastating gas fire that occurred on August 19. The fire, which blazed from 6 PM to 10:30 PM, caused significant damage to George’s Bridge, disrupting services for months.
Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has confirmed that preparations are underway for the reopening. Starting from next Monday, residents and commuters can expect to see test trams running along the affected stretch. However, TII emphasized that the official reopening hinges on the outcomes of these tests, which will take place this weekend and early next week.
A spokesperson for TII stated,
“Luas is preparing for the opening, and you will start to see some test trams running between Connolly and The Point from next Monday.”
They added that various parties are finalizing their work, which will also impact the timeline for reopening.
Since the fire, a replacement bus service has been operational, running every ten minutes during normal Luas hours to accommodate affected stops. Commuters are advised to carry valid Luas tickets or TFI Leap Cards for bus entry.
This reopening is critical for many commuters who rely on the Luas for daily travel. The disruption has not only affected transportation but also local businesses and the community, underlining the urgency of restoring this vital service.
As the situation develops, residents and commuters are encouraged to stay informed about the final test results, which will determine if the Luas Red Line can officially resume operations at the end of the month.
