A tragic incident unfolded in Manchester, where a 38-year-old man, Michael Barron, reportedly died following a high-risk sexual encounter with a 28-year-old man, Josh Baxter. This shocking development was presented in court at Minshull Street Crown Court, where details of the events leading to Mr. Barron’s death were revealed.

The court heard that the two men connected through the dating app Grindr in January 2025 and arranged to meet at Mr. Baxter’s residence for sexual activities. According to the prosecution, Mr. Baxter encouraged Mr. Barron to consume excessive amounts of alcohol, rendering him unconscious. This led to a disturbing chain of events where Mr. Baxter allegedly restrained Mr. Barron face-down on a bed and applied significant pressure to his neck, resulting in a fractured hyoid bone and cartilage.

The prosecution detailed that Mr. Barron suffered from cerebral hypoxia due to a lack of oxygen to the brain, which culminated in a cardiac arrest. The court was informed that Mr. Barron died shortly thereafter on January 26, 2025.

After the incident, Mr. Baxter reportedly conducted internet searches, including inquiries about the legal implications of accidentally causing death during sexual activity. He also ordered food through Deliveroo and continued to engage with others on Grindr, raising concerns about his immediate response to the situation.

During the opening statements, Anna Whyte KC, representing the prosecution, described Mr. Baxter’s interests in high-risk sexual activities, which he openly communicated to Mr. Barron. The messages exchanged between the two indicated a concerning dynamic, with Mr. Baxter expressing a desire for control and dominance during their encounter.

According to the prosecution, the conversations included explicit references to activities that could jeopardize Mr. Barron’s safety. Ms. Whyte stated, “Mr. Baxter was sexually motivated by high-risk sexual activity,” asserting that while Mr. Barron consented to certain actions, this did not absolve Mr. Baxter of responsibility for the inherent risks involved.

The court heard that upon Mr. Barron’s arrival at the flat, they allegedly sought additional substances, including Ketamine, and purchased more alcohol. The last recorded activity on Mr. Barron’s phone indicated a communication with a drug dealer just before the fatal encounter.

Evidence presented suggested that Mr. Barron was restrained throughout the sexual activities, leading to a situation where he could not breathe properly. The severity of Mr. Baxter’s actions was highlighted when it was noted that after Mr. Barron became unresponsive, Mr. Baxter searched online for terms related to assessing if someone was alive or breathing.

As the prosecution concluded its opening remarks, Ms. Whyte emphasized the recklessness of Mr. Baxter’s actions, stating, “Michael Barron’s death was not an accident. It was, given Josh Baxter’s recklessness and untrammelled quest for sexual gratification, a death that was waiting to happen.”

Mr. Baxter was arrested the day following the incident but remained silent during police questioning. He faces charges of manslaughter, intentional strangulation or suffocation, and unlawful infliction of grievous bodily harm. The trial is expected to continue for up to two weeks as the court examines the circumstances surrounding this tragic encounter.
