Man Fined €400 After Amphetamine Seizure in Letterkenny
UPDATE: A man has been fined €400 after being caught with €270 worth of amphetamine in Letterkenny. Frantisek Hulej, 37, was stopped by Gardaí on May 31, 2023, at 6:10 PM in the car park of Dunnes Stores on Oldtown Road.
During the stop, Gardaí conducted a search of Hulej’s vehicle, discovering a small tin foil wrap containing a white powder. Forensic Science Ireland (FSI) later confirmed the substance was 17.9 grams of amphetamine, valued at €270.
Hulej appeared before Letterkenny District Court, where his solicitor, Frank Dorrian, revealed that Hulej, originally from Poland, has been residing in Ireland for approximately six to seven years. Dorrian stated that the amphetamine was for personal use, describing the situation as “a bad idea from beginning to end.”
The court heard that Hulej, a father of two, has previously worked seasonally as a fisherman but is currently unemployed. Dorrian emphasized that Hulej possessed only a “modest amount” of the drug and noted there is no history of similar offenses.
Judge Emile Daly addressed the case, remarking, “There are more modest cases than €270.” He ultimately convicted Hulej, imposing a fine of €400 with a six-month period to pay.
This urgent case highlights ongoing issues surrounding drug possession in Ireland and raises questions about the legal repercussions for personal use. As authorities continue to address substance abuse, this incident serves as a reminder of the legal risks involved.
