Manchester United Pursues Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for Interim Role

Manchester United is in discussions with former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer regarding the vacant interim head coach position at the club. Alongside him, Michael Carrick, another former player, is also part of the ongoing talks as the club seeks to finalize its management structure.

The initial discussions took place on Tuesday with Jason Wilcox, the sporting director, but further conversations are expected later this week. Notably, these discussions will not occur on Wednesday, as the focus shifts to the upcoming Premier League match against Burnley. Reports indicate that both Solskjaer and Carrick may have roles in the revamped coaching team.

Currently, Darren Fletcher, also a former United player, is set to lead the team during their match at Burnley. The club has not only prioritized Solskjaer and Carrick but is also evaluating other candidates, including former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The vacancy arose following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim on Monday. Sources suggest that a tense meeting between Wilcox and Amorim last Friday led to a series of events culminating in the Portuguese manager’s exit. The club has not had a permanent head coach since Amorim’s departure, leaving them in a crucial phase as they navigate the remainder of the season.

If Solskjaer is reinstated, it would mark his return to the managerial role he first assumed in December 2018, after the dismissal of José Mourinho. He was initially appointed on an interim basis before being confirmed as the permanent manager in March 2019. His tenure ended in November 2021, at which point Carrick took over temporarily.

Manchester United currently sits sixth in the Premier League standings, having secured eight wins from their first 20 matches this season. The club is looking to regain its competitive edge in the league as it approaches the crucial mid-season phase.

As discussions continue, fans and analysts alike are eager to see how the club will address its management challenges and what direction it will take in the coming weeks.
