McEntee Joins Allies in Paris to Strengthen Support for Ukraine

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Helen McEntee, is attending a crucial meeting of the Coalition of the Willing in Paris today, aimed at reinforcing international support for Ukraine amid ongoing conflict with Russia. This gathering, which includes foreign leaders and ministers from 35 countries, seeks to coordinate efforts to bolster Ukraine’s position and strategize on diplomatic solutions to the war.

Key Participants and Objectives

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will participate in the discussions, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron. The meeting marks a significant alignment of interests among allies, particularly between Washington, Kyiv, and various European partners, with a focus on security guarantees for Ukraine. This comes as Zelenskyy and his administration continue discussions with the United States regarding a potential peace plan.

Yesterday, US President Donald Trump stated that an investigation determined Ukraine was not responsible for an alleged attack on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residence, asserting that the incident had not occurred. Notably, Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, are also expected to attend the meeting.

Support for Ukraine and Future Plans

In advance of the meeting, McEntee emphasized Ireland’s unwavering support for Ukraine, which has endured nearly four years of relentless aggression from Russia. She highlighted Ireland’s commitment, particularly during President Zelenskyy’s visit to Ireland last month and through the European Union’s decision in December to provide a loan of €90 billion over the next two years to assist Ukraine.

“As diplomatic efforts have intensified in recent weeks, including ongoing efforts led by the United States aimed at bringing peace to Ukraine, today’s meeting is an opportunity to take stock of progress achieved so far,” McEntee stated.

McEntee further noted the necessity of increasing pressure on Russia to cease its “illegal and brutal war.” She reiterated that the Ukrainian government and its people should determine their own future, with any peace agreement upholding Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence. “This is also crucial for Europe’s future security,” she added, stressing the importance of EU and other European partners being involved in shaping the final outcome.

The meeting in Paris represents a pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts to support Ukraine and collectively address the challenges posed by Russian aggression. With leaders from various nations gathered to discuss strategies, the international community aims to bolster Ukraine’s resilience and negotiate a lasting peace.
