New Year’s Eve Light Up the Night Raises €85,000 for Mental Health

UPDATE: On New Year’s Eve, the skies over Ballyragget, Castlecomer, Durrow, and surrounding areas were ablaze with lights from tractors and trucks, part of the annual Light up the Night event. This initiative, which raises awareness for suicide and mental health, successfully generated a staggering €85,000 for local charities this year.
The North Kilkenny Truck and Tractor Run, now in its eighth year, brings together communities to support vital mental health organizations. This year’s beneficiaries include the Kilkenny Bereavement Support Centre, Anam Cara, Teac Tom, and Ballyragget Men’s Shed. Each organization was present to accept their donations and share insights on how the funds will be utilized to aid those in need.
Freddie Farrell, chairperson of the organizing committee, noted the event’s evolution since its inception in 2016. “What started as a campaign for awareness has become a cherished social gathering, helping to destigmatize mental health discussions,” he stated. The event has now raised more than €85,000 for local mental health initiatives, significantly impacting the community.
As the night unfolded, the atmosphere was filled with hope and camaraderie, reinforcing the message that it’s okay not to be okay, and help is available. The organizing committee expressed profound gratitude to everyone involved, emphasizing that the success of the event hinges on the community’s support.
Plans are already underway for next year’s Light up the Night, promising to continue the tradition of awareness and support for mental health. The 2025 event aims to attract even more participants and raise additional funds for critical services.
As the community reflects on this year’s success, it stands united in the fight against mental health stigma and in support of those affected. Stay tuned for more updates on this impactful initiative as preparations for the next event begin.
