Olympic Champion Rhys McClenaghan Awarded MBE in Honours List
UPDATE: Olympic gold medalist Rhys McClenaghan has just been awarded an MBE in Britain’s New Year Honours List, a significant recognition of his extraordinary achievements in gymnastics. The announcement comes just months after McClenaghan made history by winning Ireland’s first gold medal in gymnastics at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the pommel horse category.
The Newtownards native has garnered admiration not only for his athletic prowess but also for his humility. Gordon Lyons, Northern Ireland’s Minister of Communities, praised McClenaghan, stating, “This is a fitting reward for his years of total dedication and countless hours of training.” Lyons met McClenaghan during the Paris Olympics and was inspired by his determination.
McClenaghan represents Ireland internationally, having progressed through the Irish gymnastics system. He has also won gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and is a two-time world champion, solidifying his status as a leading figure in the sport.
Among other notable honorees in Northern Ireland, Hilary McGrady, director general of the National Trust, received a CB for her services to heritage. She expressed pride in her contributions to the organization and the sector.
In academia, Paul Bartholomew, vice-chancellor of Ulster University, was honored with a CB for his impact on higher education, while Tara Moore was awarded an OBE for her extensive research in health and disease.
Freelance broadcaster Helen Mark, known for her work on BBC’s Open Country, expressed joy at receiving an MBE, stating, “This is like the icing on the top of my radio cake.”
Public service also saw recognition, with Elizabeth Hamilton, a security guard at Stormont Castle, being awarded an MBE. She was initially skeptical upon receiving the letter from the Cabinet Office, thinking it might be a scam.
Charity worker Margaret Peacock, who has dedicated over four decades to providing Christmas dinners for those in need, also earned an MBE for her selfless contributions.
In a broader context, Colum Boyle, permanent secretary at the Department for Communities, was honored with a CB, while Ronnie Armour, interim permanent secretary at the Department of Education, received a CBE. Additionally, Maria McIlgorm, Northern Ireland’s chief nursing officer, was awarded an OBE for her services to nursing and midwifery.
These awards reflect a commitment to recognizing excellence and dedication across various sectors in Northern Ireland, underscoring the impact of these individuals on their communities.
