Outrage Erupts as Ibiza Bar Charges £10 for Bag Hook Service

URGENT UPDATE: A shocking incident at a trendy Ibiza bar has sparked outrage after a diner was charged £10 for hanging her bag on a table hook. The incident occurred at Wakame Ibiza on August 5, where tourist Laura Cunei shared a photo of the receipt showing a €12 charge listed as “gancho bolsa,” translating to “bag hook.”
Cunei expressed her disbelief on social media, stating, “The waitress kindly offers to hang our bags on a little hook at the table. We decline her offer, but due to her insistence, we accepted.” The unexpected fee left her questioning if such charges are even legal.
After reviewing the bill, which included the dubious charge, Cunei and her party voiced their concerns to the staff, prompting a new receipt without the bag hook fee. “When we saw the receipt, we told them it didn’t seem right to pay that much because we hadn’t asked for it,” she noted.
Social media erupted with reactions, with many users expressing their disbelief. Hospitality expert Jesus Soriano shared the post on TikTok, drawing further attention to the bizarre situation. One user quipped, “They’ll be charging us to breathe next,” while others shared similar horror stories of unexpected charges at restaurants.
Spain’s consumer protection agency, OCU, weighed in on the controversy, providing a link for complaints related to the incident. Following the backlash, Wakame Ibiza claimed the charge was a “misunderstanding,” attributing it to a system error that incorrectly priced the service as a merchandise item. The restaurant stated, “The amount that appeared on the ticket was the result of an error in our system. It was marked as a merchandising item with a price, when it should have been shown with zero cost.”
This incident highlights growing concerns among diners globally about unexpected and often outrageous surcharges. Reports from the United States have seen similar complaints, with diners expressing frustration over hidden fees labeled as “silly and disingenuous” on social media.
As tourists continue to flock to popular destinations, the scrutiny over dining practices intensifies. In recent weeks, travelers have shared alarming experiences of alleged scams in various hotspots, including accusations against a Croatian-based rental company for aggressive sales tactics and unauthorized charges.
WHAT’S NEXT: As the story develops, many are left wondering how restaurants will address transparency in pricing and whether this incident will lead to wider scrutiny of charges in the hospitality industry. Diners are advised to remain vigilant and question unexpected fees at establishments to avoid similar surprises.
Stay tuned for more updates as this story unfolds and as diners around the world rally for fair treatment at restaurants.
