Polish Man Loses Appeal After Attempted Murder of Flatmate

UPDATE: A Polish man, Dominik Biber, has been denied a sentence reduction for the attempted murder of his flatmate, Tomasz Grosser, in a shocking knife attack fueled by drugs. The Court of Appeal rejected Biber’s appeal today, confirming his 11-year prison sentence for the brutal assault that occurred on April 11, 2020, in Limerick, Ireland.

This case highlights the disturbing consequences of drug use and the violence it can incite. During the attack, Biber, 28, believed he was Jesus Christ and was in a drug-induced psychosis. The violent episode involved a prolonged assault where Biber stabbed Grosser multiple times, leaving him with severe injuries before he managed to escape.

The Central Criminal Court sentenced Biber to 13 years in December 2022, with the last two years suspended. The attack was described by Judge Paul McDermott as a “ferocious and spontaneous eruption of terrible violence.” Biber’s legal counsel argued that the circumstances surrounding the attack were unusual, noting that Grosser had allowed Biber to live with him “on a grace and favours basis.”

Despite these claims, the prosecution maintained that Biber had a history of drug abuse, having begun using cannabis at 17 and later turning to cocaine. His past experiences with drug-induced psychosis were cited during the appeal, but the court emphasized Biber’s continued illicit drug use despite knowing the risks.

In a dramatic recounting of the incident, it was revealed that Biber attacked Grosser after accusing him of theft while under the influence of drugs. Witnesses described how Biber blocked Grosser’s escape with furniture and launched a frenzied attack with a knife, repeatedly declaring, “I’ll kill you.”

Grosser, who sustained multiple stab wounds, managed to defend himself and escape to a neighbor’s apartment, where he called for help. When authorities arrived, they found him bloodied and motionless. Biber continued to struggle violently with police, requiring them to use batons to subdue him.

The appeal hearing saw Biber’s attorney, Michael Bowman SC, argue for a reduction in sentence, emphasizing his client’s potential for rehabilitation and his otherwise law-abiding history. However, the prosecution countered that the original sentence was justified given the severity of the crime and the risk Biber posed to society.

In dismissing the appeal, Justice Peter Charleton stated there was no basis to interfere with the sentence, which reflects the seriousness of Biber’s actions. A written judgment detailing the court’s reasoning will be released later.

This case serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by substance abuse and the severe legal consequences that can follow violent behavior. As Biber serves his time, the community remains shaken by the horrific events that unfolded in their neighborhood.
