Rachael Blackmore Takes On New Role at Cheltenham Racecourse
UPDATE: Rachael Blackmore, the trailblazing National Hunt jockey, has just been appointed as the new Head of Ladies Day at Cheltenham Racecourse. This surprising career shift comes just months after her retirement in May, where she left an indelible mark on the sport as the first woman to win prestigious races like the Grand National and Gold Cup.
Blackmore’s new role, announced today, is set to revitalize Ladies Day at the Cheltenham Festival, which returns in March 2024 for the first time since 2019. Her mission is to engage more women in horse racing, a sport where data shows that only 25 percent of visitors to Cheltenham are female. The Jockey Club has highlighted the need for more inclusive initiatives to attract a broader audience.
“It is going to be a very different experience going racing and not heading for the weighing room,” Blackmore stated. “I’m looking forward to seeing what racedays are like from the other side of the rails.” Her insights will be crucial as she works with Cheltenham to identify barriers preventing women from attending races and to build a welcoming environment for new female fans.
Recent data from the Racecourse Association indicates that the average female attendance at jump racing events is around 39 percent. However, many women feel the sport is not designed for them, according to a 2023 survey by The Jockey Club. Blackmore aims to change this perception by encouraging social interactions and showcasing the unique experiences that a day at the races can offer.
Guy Lavender, Chief Executive of Cheltenham, expressed confidence in Blackmore’s impact: “Rachael is a household name whose success resonates not only with racing fans but also with a wider audience.” He emphasized the potential to grow the female fanbase, bolstered by Blackmore’s significant achievements and her status as a role model.
Blackmore, who famously rode A Plus Tard to victory in the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2022 and won the Grand National in 2021 aboard Minella Times, will make her debut as a racegoer at Cheltenham’s November Meeting on November 14, 2023. Her presence is expected to generate excitement and encourage discussions about the inclusivity of horse racing.
As the racing community eagerly anticipates her contributions, Blackmore’s new role signals a pivotal shift toward a more inclusive future for the sport. Stay tuned for updates as she embarks on this exciting journey to reshape Ladies Day and engage a new generation of racing enthusiasts.
