Remembering Nellie Cashman: “Angel of the Yukon” Dies Jan 4, 1925

UPDATE: Today marks the 98th anniversary of the death of Nellie Cashman, known as the “Angel of the Yukon,” who passed away on January 4, 1925. Her remarkable legacy as a humanitarian and gold prospector continues to resonate, inspiring many worldwide.

Cashman, born in Midleton, County Cork, in 1845, during a tumultuous time in Ireland, made her way to the United States with her family in search of a better life. She became renowned for her selfless acts, but none more so than her daring rescue of 77 miners during a devastating snowstorm in the Yukon.

In 1874, Cashman set up a boarding house in the Cassiar Mountains, where she offered lodging in exchange for donations to St. Anne’s Church. When a blizzard trapped miners in Canada’s Yukon region, she bravely organized a rescue mission, defying warnings from the Canadian Army. Her relentless determination led to the successful recovery of the men, whom she nursed back to health.

By 1880, Cashman had relocated to Tombstone, Arizona, where she continued her philanthropic efforts. She opened a boarding house and restaurant, served as a nurse, and was deeply involved in charity work, including the construction of a local church.

In her later years, Cashman faced personal tragedies, including the loss of her sister, whom she cared for by raising her children. Despite challenges, her adventurous spirit remained unbroken as she pursued gold prospecting across the West.

Sadly, in late 1924, Cashman contracted pneumonia and rheumatism, leading to her hospitalization near Victoria, British Columbia. She spent her final days in the very hospital she had worked to support decades earlier.

Cashman’s death on January 4, 1925, left a void in the hearts of many. However, her legacy is alive through memorials, including a newly erected statue in her honor in Midleton, and ongoing efforts by Irish ex-pat Dr. Perry Lydon to construct a memorial at her burial site.
