UPDATE: A jury at the Old Bailey has just found Peter Augustine, 59, guilty of the murder of John Mackey, an 87-year-old pensioner, in a shocking robbery that occurred on May 6 in Manor House, North London. The verdict was delivered Thursday, igniting emotional reactions from Mackey’s family in the courtroom.

Augustine brutally attacked Mackey, inflicting fatal injuries while stealing a box of cornflakes and a cottage pie. As the jury read the verdict, family members erupted in cheers, with one declaring, “Justice, right – that’s what we wanted.” This conviction underscores the harrowing reality of violence against vulnerable individuals.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing Augustine kick and punch Mackey as he lay defenseless on the ground. A passer-by alerted police after hearing shouts and discovering Mackey bleeding and unconscious. Despite regaining consciousness, Mackey was unable to recount the attack to authorities and succumbed to his injuries two days later.

CCTV footage revealed that Mackey, who set out shortly after 5 PM wearing a distinctive trilby hat and carrying a walking stick, had just purchased groceries from a Co-op store. After leaving the shop, Augustine began to stalk Mackey, who was last seen on camera at 5:50 PM. Augustine appeared shortly after, carrying what appeared to be Mackey’s bag.

Investigators found remnants of the stolen groceries in Augustine’s room, leading to his arrest two days post-attack. Authorities noted Augustine displayed no remorse during custody, making threats and exhibiting violent behavior towards officers.

Prosecutor Jane Bickerstaff KC highlighted the vulnerability of Mackey, describing him as “largely unable to put up any resistance due to his age and infirmity.” The court heard how Augustine, living in reduced circumstances and effectively homeless, used “extreme force” against Mackey.

In a poignant statement, Mackey’s family expressed gratitude for the support they received throughout the investigation. They shared memories of a beloved uncle known for his charm, humor, and generosity. “He was the perfect uncle… always a proud Irishman,” the family stated, reflecting on their loss.

Acting detective chief inspector John Marriott, who led the investigation, emphasized the tragedy of Mackey’s death over trivial items. “It is a shameful tragedy that John was killed by Augustine, for a mere few bits of shopping. He deserved better,” Marriott said.

Augustine is scheduled for sentencing on November 28. This case has raised significant concerns about safety and violence against the elderly in urban areas, prompting a broader discussion about community protection and support for vulnerable populations.

Stay tuned for further updates as the sentencing date approaches and community responses develop.
