Russian Strikes Claim Lives in Zaporizhzhia and Odesa
At least five individuals lost their lives when a Russian glide bomb struck a residential district in the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia. The attack, which occurred on November 3, 2023, also caused significant damage to high-rise apartment buildings and a local market, according to regional officials. This incident marks a continuation of Moscow’s relentless targeting of civilian areas amid the ongoing conflict.
The head of the regional military administration, Ivan Fedorov, reported that this recent strike is the third instance in which glide bombs have devastated residential areas in Zaporizhzhia since the war’s onset. The bombs, which are retrofitted Soviet weapons deployed by Russian jets flying at high altitudes, have increasingly wreaked havoc on Ukraine’s front-line cities. Unfortunately, Ukraine currently lacks effective countermeasures against these aerial attacks.
In a separate incident, a Russian drone assault on the southern city of Odesa struck a residential area during the night, injuring five people. This attack comes on the heels of another deadly barrage that hit the western city of Ternopil, where a combination of drone and missile strikes resulted in the deaths of 31 people, including six children, and left 94 others injured.
Moscow has significantly escalated its aerial campaign against Ukraine in recent months, with a particular focus on energy infrastructure and civilian targets. The attacks have created dire conditions for many Ukrainian civilians, who now face more than 15 hours of daily power outages amid the worsening winter weather.
According to authorities, the Ternopil attacks included various types of air assault weaponry, such as X-101 missiles and Kalibr missiles. Emergency services continue to search for 13 individuals who remain unaccounted for following the destruction of apartment blocks, which were severely damaged as a result of the strikes.
As the conflict continues, the humanitarian situation in Ukraine grows increasingly precarious. Civilians are grappling with the harsh realities of winter while dealing with ongoing attacks that threaten their safety and livelihoods. The international community remains watchful as the situation evolves, with many calling for renewed discussions on peace and stability in the region.
