Shay Given Issues Urgent Apology for ‘Holocaust’ Comment
UPDATE: Former Ireland international Shay Given has issued an urgent apology following controversial remarks made during the BBC show Final Score today. Given referred to Wilfried Nancy’s brief tenure as Celtic manager as an “absolute Holocaust,” sparking immediate backlash on social media.
The incident occurred live on air, with Given’s comments drawing swift criticism for their insensitivity, given the historical significance of the term. Nancy’s managerial stint lasted just eight games over 33 days, and the comparison to the Holocaust, in which an estimated six million Jews were murdered during World War II, was deemed inappropriate by many viewers.
Following the backlash, Given took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his remorse, stating, “I used a word that I didn’t fully understand the meaning of, and certainly won’t ever use again.” He acknowledged the gravity of his mistake and vowed to educate himself further on the matter.
In his statement, Given added, “I am genuinely mortified and apologise unreservedly to everyone offended.” He also announced that he would be donating his fee from today’s show to the Holocaust Educational Trust as a gesture of goodwill.
Presenter Jason Mohammad also addressed the issue during the broadcast, apologizing for the “inappropriate language” used by Given. The network is likely to face scrutiny regarding the incident, raising questions about editorial oversight in live programming.
This incident highlights the vital importance of sensitivity in public discourse, particularly surrounding historical tragedies. The public’s reaction underscores a growing intolerance for careless language that can trivialize significant events.
As this story develops, many are calling for a broader discussion on accountability in sports commentary and the responsibility of public figures to choose their words carefully. The conversation continues as fans and commentators alike reflect on the implications of Given’s comments and the necessity for respectful dialogue in sports and beyond.
