Sinn Féin Demands Release of Drone Footage as Investigation Unfolds
URGENT UPDATE: Sinn Féin is demanding the immediate release of drone footage from an incident involving a Naval Service ship during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Ireland on December 1, 2023. The party’s Defence spokesman Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire insists that public access to this footage is crucial for transparency amidst rising conspiracy theories.
The incident occurred just one hour before President Zelensky’s plane landed at Dublin Airport, with several large drones reportedly buzzing the LÉ William Butler Yeats, a €71 million Naval Service vessel stationed off the coast of Howth, north Co Dublin. Ó Laoghaire, who represents Cork South Central, emphasized the need to dispel doubts surrounding the event. “Releasing this footage would certainly assist in dispelling conspiracies,” he stated in a recent interview.
Authorities confirm that a major Garda investigation is currently underway regarding the drone sighting. Ó Laoghaire highlighted the seriousness of the situation, especially given the high-profile nature of President Zelensky’s visit. “This incident was potentially very serious, and transparency is key to national security,” he added.
The Naval Service personnel on board captured video and still images of the drones, but the Defence Forces have so far declined to provide a timeline for the release of this material. A spokesperson noted, “Since the matter is under investigation, it is inappropriate to speculate on any timeline associated with the events referred to.”
Both Taoiseach Micheal Martin and Defence Forces Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Rossa Mulcahy confirmed last month that drones were indeed spotted over the ship. They defended the decision made by personnel not to engage, with Martin stating, “We have to trust in operational decision-making.” Mulcahy added, “The actions of the crew to de-escalate rather than escalate the situation were absolutely prudent and right at the time.”
Concerns have been raised about the possible involvement of foreign entities, particularly Russia, which has been accused of orchestrating various provocations amid its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. A spokesperson for the Russian Embassy in Dublin vehemently denied any responsibility, stating, “We categorically reject any attempt to portray this incident as having possible Russian involvement.”
Ó Laoghaire’s call for transparency resonates with public sentiment, as citizens increasingly demand accountability regarding national security incidents. “Other countries regularly release footage of such incidents for transparency and public understanding,” he remarked. “Ireland should do the same.”
As the investigation continues, the spotlight remains on the authorities. Observers are keenly awaiting the release of the footage to clarify the circumstances surrounding the December 1 incident and to restore public confidence in national security measures.
