UPDATE: An Amber Alert is in effect for Derry and Donegal as Storm Bram unleashes gusts of up to 70 MPH. The Met Office warns that the worst of the severe weather will strike the northwest region between mid to late afternoon today.

Authorities have responded swiftly, locking the gates of parks, cemeteries, and public spaces across Derry and Strabane to ensure public safety. The NI Executive confirmed that multi-agency preparations are underway to manage the storm’s impact effectively.

A spokesperson for the PSNI urged road users to exercise extreme caution, stating, “Road users are advised to reduce speed and drive with extra caution given this morning’s wet road conditions.” Heavy rain has already led to surface water and localized flooding, with travel disruptions anticipated.

The Met Office issued a weather warning valid from 9 AM to 9 PM today, cautioning that gusty winds may cause power outages and infrastructure damage. The Department for Infrastructure has mobilized teams to clear drainage systems and monitor river levels, preparing for a potential tidal surge expected during high tide early this afternoon.

Quote from the NI Executive: The Executive highlighted the risks, stating, “Strong winds could lead to power cuts, damage to buildings, fallen trees, and disruption to travel.” In light of these conditions, the public is advised to stay away from coastal areas where waves may pose significant hazards.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and refrain from placing bins out for collection unless in a safe location. The Derry City & Strabane District Council announced that all outdoor sites, including cemeteries (except for burials), will remain closed during the storm.

Travelers should remain informed and plan ahead. The Translink public transportation authority recommends checking its Journey Planner or social media for updates, allowing extra time for journeys due to potential delays.

As conditions worsen, the public is reminded to adhere to road signs and traffic regulations. The NI Executive emphasizes that safety is paramount: “If you are in trouble or see someone in difficulty at the coast, call 999 and ask for Coastguard.”

With the storm intensifying, immediate action and vigilance are crucial. Stay tuned for further developments and updates on services impacted by Storm Bram.
