Storm Bram Knocks Out Power for 54,000; Major Travel Disruptions
UPDATE: Over 54,000 homes and businesses are currently without power as Storm Bram wreaks havoc across Ireland. High winds and severe flooding have led to significant disruptions in both road and air travel, with conditions expected to worsen throughout the day.
Residents in the East are facing dangerous conditions as wind gusts reach 96 km/h at Casement, while reports from Sherkin Island indicate gusts of up to 119 km/h as of 1 PM today. Authorities are warning drivers of treacherous crosswinds during the evening commute, further elevating concerns about safety on the roads.
Areas like Wicklow are experiencing extreme weather, with local businesses scrambling for sandbags as the Leitrim River swells dangerously high. Meanwhile, in Wexford, thousands are left in the dark due to downed power lines and fallen trees, which have also caused bridge closures in the region.
Air travel is facing major disruptions as more than 70 flights have been canceled at Dublin Airport, with additional cancellations reported at Shannon Airport. Train services have also been suspended between Dublin’s Grand Canal Dock and Dún Laoghaire due to fallen trees obstructing tracks.
In Waterford, local officials have announced the closure of the train station due to flooding, with bus transfers being arranged between Kilkenny and Waterford. Ongoing flood defense works are set to resume in the new year to mitigate future disruptions.
As the storm continues to track north, the situation remains critical. Residents are urged to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. The Orange Warning remains in effect for nine counties, and authorities are closely monitoring the storm’s progression.
This is a developing story, and updates will continue as more information becomes available. Stay tuned for the latest as we track the impact of Storm Bram.
