Met Éireann has issued a weather forecast indicating a chilly end to 2025, with sub-zero temperatures expected in various regions as the year draws to a close. The last Monday of the year, December 29, is anticipated to start off cloudy across much of the country, with light rain expected in some areas.

In the northern regions of Ulster and Connacht, there may be some brighter spells as the day progresses, with temperatures peaking between 3 and 7 degrees Celsius. As night falls, clouds will linger, and scattered showers are forecast for the eastern and southern parts of the country. Overnight, temperatures are expected to drop to as low as -2 degrees Celsius in the north and northwest, while other areas might see temperatures ranging from 2 to 6 degrees Celsius.

Looking ahead to Tuesday, December 30, the weather will begin with another cloudy start, but brighter moments are likely to develop throughout the day. Forecasts suggest that scattered showers may occur in the south and east, while temperatures will remain low, reinforcing the cold conditions.

Tuesday night will bring a dry and crisp atmosphere, with clear spells anticipated. However, fog or freezing fog could form in certain areas, leading to low temperatures that may plummet to between -3 and +1 degrees Celsius.

New Year’s Eve, set for Wednesday, will be marked by frost, with fog and freezing fog expected to persist for part of the day. Nonetheless, sunny spells are predicted to develop, providing some relief from the cold. Although outbreaks of rain and drizzle are likely to affect the Atlantic coasts, the rest of the country can expect drier weather.

As 2025 concludes, residents are urged to prepare for the cold snap, which is expected to dominate the weather patterns in the coming days.
