Surfer Airlifted After Incident on Clare Coast During Challenging Conditions

A surfer was airlifted to hospital after encountering difficulties while surfing at Ballard Bay, located south of Doonbeg, Co Clare, on the morning of March 15, 2024. The incident was reported to the Irish Coast Guard around 11:30 hours when a member of the public observed a person lying on the rocks and raised the alarm.

This incident marks the third occurrence in the same area in recent months. The observer’s quick action not only alerted emergency services but also drew the attention of nearby surfers, who rushed to assist the individual in distress.

The Kilkee unit of the Coast Guard, along with the National Ambulance Service and local Gardaí, were dispatched to the scene. Additionally, the Shannon-based search and rescue helicopter, known as Rescue 115, was called to aid in the rescue operation.

Rescue Operations Under Challenging Conditions

A group of surfers had gathered in the area to ride the renowned Riley’s Wave, which often attracts surfers and body-boarders from across Ireland and abroad during periods of significant swell. While the injured surfer managed to reach the rocks, conditions in the area were reported to be challenging.

Rescue 115’s winchman and paramedic were lowered to the scene, where they faced difficulties due to the terrain. After several attempts, the winchman successfully reached the shoreline to assess the injured surfer. Following treatment, the casualty was winched aboard the helicopter and flown to University Hospital Galway for further medical attention.

Co Clare has been under a wind warning since 14:00 hours, which may have contributed to the hazardous conditions faced by surfers in the area.

Previous Incidents Highlight Safety Concerns

This recent incident is not isolated. In November 2022, another surfer was airlifted to hospital following an accident at the same location. Similarly, in September 2022, a surfer required helicopter assistance due to injuries sustained while surfing. Notably, in 2016, a body-boarder was also airlifted from Ballard Bay after sustaining injuries.

These repeated incidents underscore the need for caution among surfers, particularly during adverse weather conditions. The ongoing safety dialogue emphasizes the importance of being vigilant while enjoying the coastal waters.
